Late Road Tax

Hello,

I moved house two months ago and stupidly have forgot to update my log book and driving license. I got out my car today and was walking to supermarket and caught site of my road tax disc, it expired yesterday (31/10/09). Can anyone advise if there is a grace period? I will go out and by my road tax tomorrow morning asap but does anyone know if I will get a fine as it will be two days late? I was suppose to pick up my brother tonight from train station, if there is no grace period I will have to arrange alternative transport for him.

Any advice on any of these questions would be much appreciated.

Regards

Matt

You won't get fined for being 2 days late, but if you get caught on the road without a valid tax disc, then you will get done for "failing to display" a current tax disc.

There is no grace period. (Except for those applying on line prior to the expiry of the current disc, when they get 5 days - no good for you though, as yours is already expired)

You can do it on-line today, http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/
    but the site says

"DVLA is closely monitoring the Postal Strike to make sure that it does all it can to minimise disruption to its customers. There's still plenty of time for your new tax disc to arrive by 1st class post before the end of the month. You can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road while displaying your old tax disc for up to five working days, provided you have applied for a new disc before the old one expires. "

so as your disc has already expired, I'm not sure where that would leave you.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

No good if he wants it on the road legally.

Even though the tax would be paid, the separate offence of failing to display a valid tax disc would be committed every time the car is on a public road.

If you moved house 2 months ago, won't you be missing the V11 to renew the tax? If so, you'll need to either take your V5 to the post office or fill in a V10

Quentin's right about there being no grace period in your case. I'd arrange alternative transport if I were you.
