Paid cheque TO post office ltd. how long to clear

Options
Hi,

Just noticed my car tax was out yesterday. Need to sort out asap as don't want clamping etc. Wont have enough cash til Wednesday 4th October but intend taking docs and cheque to Post Office tomorrow and paying by cheque. As said won't truly have enough in account until Wednesday.

As I will give the cheque to PO tomorrow how quickly will this clear for them. I bank with Abbey and assume it would stil need to go through the inter bank processing and hopefully this will allow time to get money in by Wednesday.

Anyone have better info than I on this. I know i'm stupid but wouldn't have realised disc was out if I hadn't needed to check tyre this morning so was a bit of extra pressure to find extra £96 immediately.

thanks, dulede :embarasse

The Post Office will send it off overnight to their processing centre.

When it gets there it will be paid into a bank account. So I reckon it will hit your account on Thursday:

    Paid in Tuesday
    Clearing House Wednesday
    Your bank Thursday

Assuming postal strikes don't delay it on its way to the processing centre and that the Abbey is not slower than other banks. (It certainly won't be quicker)

So I reckon you are OK - but no responsibility accepted if I'm wrong.....

No responsibility at all my friend. . LOL.... don't know if text speak okay on here

I believe and hope your correct. Its pretty much what I expected but you find each and every bank moves the goal posts to suit themselves and a shorter time wouldn't be impossible with a given situation meeting certain bank conditions.

Banking processes are all smoke and mirrors. Fact is I'll worry til I get funds in on Wednesday but I'll worry 'just a little' thanks to your response.

    Regards, dulede
  • Again no responsibility accepted, but

if it was me I would find out what time the Post Office closes and go 10 minutes before.

It may or may not delay them getting it to your bank by a day.

    Just an idea
  • I really don't know the answer to this - but does the PO still accept cheques for car tax?
  • If you have a credit card you can pay your car tax online but they charge £2.50 for the credit card transaction.

Yes they do, as they do for nearly everything

    AndyStriker,

I am planning on leaving til late in the afternoon. I could wait til I got the cash on Wednesday but don't want to run into some lunatic with a car clamping fetish. Absolutely ridiculous the way those people can get away with things most people would consider 'wrong'. If I'd have realised 2 days ago I'd have the money now but I've paid some bills online and so that options now gone.

Bingy_Burge, Glad to say that no longer credit worthy so debit card only. Not nice in itself but I at least know I can't consolidate my debts anymore and have to live, more or less, within means. I was never a saver but it makes you consider things more. CCJs and charging orders help clarify the mind. But yes in situations like this perhaps a CC would be a short term God send.

No - cheque it is and at least then I've got a disc to stop the 'clamp monster' which is really my only concern but I know you may not see one for months and then when you least expect it - wham!!!!

    take care all, dulede

That will make no difference. Postmasters reconcile their cheques and the accompanying documents as soon as they're closed. Then they're fast tracked to the processing centre where the cheques are processed overnight.
If they still do it as I saw it overnight a few years ago - then all the cheques from England are in by the early hours and all out for Clearing by 1100hrs next day. So if you pay direct to the PO on Monday then they can hit your account overnight Tuesday.

So if you want to be safe - leave it to Tue to pay. Or hope that the industrial action slows the process down - as the fast tracking is internal. But moves much more quickly than public mail!
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
