  • Morning peeps, and thanks for keeping up with my moaning

EssexH, Salar Salmon.............mmmmm......yum...............drool. That is a special treat when friends come with bagels and cream cheese, or in scrambled eggs. Market Stance don't break up cars unfortunately, but I've ordered a second hand sump and throttle box off the net for £200 with delivery. Now apparently I need to get a sump gasket too............

The Bex, hi, nice to meet you. The friend that serviced my car cleaned up the sump for me and tried sealing it, but it's still oozing oil. The air is very salty here - noticed how quickly rust started to appear after we moved here. Also, think it is probably pitted from bumping down rocky roads to crofts etc for my job ( meter reading. ) Could do with a wee 4 x 4.

Yes, the diary acts as a catalyst I think. It's an admission that things have gone wrong, but also the start of trying to be more proactive instead of pretending that it will be OK without actually doing anything to head in that direction. A lot of the changes have stemmed from following the wealth of good advice on here, from good people like yourselves :T

EH, I got my Tesco clubcard last time I was in Stornoway - that's a great idea for pressies for DS. Bless him, he's aware that we don't have a lot of money at the mo and is very tolerant. Guess he was spoiled when we lived in the Emirates - you tend to spend a lot of time in air-conditioned shopping malls along with your tax free salary!!!
Btw, I will probably be working in Stornoway next month - will let you know re: the pudding hunting.

Right, off to order the gasket and phone the mortgage people. Haven't heard anything since I sent off the paperwork, so hoping it didn't get lost in the post.

Hope you're all keeping safe and are not affected by the bad weather. It's been OK here really, if a bit wet............we'll get the gales in the New Year.

  • I was being blonde when I mentioned Tesco really wasn't I - for some reason I was thinking of you being further North than you are! LOL - Co-op it'll be then I guess?! One thing we noticed last time we were up is that if you're ever round the western side of N.Uist the Sollas co-op does the best reductions of all of them up there that we've found - lots of veggies down to 10p in the last afternoons. :D *sighs* 4 and a half months until we're up again - can't wait!

  • Next month will be my busy month, I think, with the quarterly meter readings, so I'll be up around Sollas at some point. I love it up there.
We'll have to meet up next time you're here and have a wee dram

That'd be good - we're always "down south" at some stage - love the walk up the Hill at South Lochboisdale/ North Glendale looking out over Lochboisdale, and also anywhere along the beaches on the Western coast of course! :D

I think the record in the Sollas co-op at the moment stands at 3 courgettes for 10p - one of them was slightly mushy but with that bit cut off they cooked up beautifully!

*edit* - just thought, if you like eating cockles, did you realise that they can be gathered on the beach at Creagorry at low tide? You just need a rake and a bucket......! Half an hour sees us with easily enough for a good meal for two - I usually cook them in a cream & wine sauce and have with either rice or pasta. Yum yum!

  • :rotfl:Lol, I'm laughing because I have to walk up that hill for work!! I have to read meters at a lot of Scottish Water sites and there's a water tank half way up the hill that has a meter box. The walk's fine when the weather is good!! First time I tried that one, had to turn back cos it was so boggy, the water was coming over the top of my wellies. Then there's the risk of getting blown over to Barra ...........:rotfl:
Been cockling a few times.........DS was digging for them with his bare feet in the summer. But he doesn't like eating them, so we don't go that often.

Just found out I might have another part time job at the range head :T It's only 10 hours a week cleaning, but a job's a job here and an extra £200 a month won't go wrong. As long as they don't mind me going off to Stornoway a couple of days every quarter for the meter reading.

  • Yes - amazing how you can be climbing up a hill and there is so much water everywhere, isn't it! Don't think anyone has told the Hebridean rain that it's meant to drain downwards! :rotfl:

Well done on the job also - good news, as you say, ten hours is ten hours!

  • *cough*....er....no thanks. Can you look after it for us for a little bit longer??
But seriously, hope you're all OK down there. Talked to my Mum earlier and she said it has been pouring it down all day in Ayrshire.
    Stay safe, y'all.

  • Got an interview for the cleaning job down at West Camp on Tuesday. Cos its work at the range head ( I'll be in the funny 'golf ball' on the hill ) there's all sorts of security checks etc.
And on the mortgage front, I contacted London & County a few weeks ago after reading Martin's recommendations. They asked me to get a redemption figure on my current mortgage, but I was having trouble getting a figure out of my bank. From the paperwork it looks like there's no penalty cos the mortgage is not in the early stages.
Anyhoo, they got back in touch and are applying for a remortgage with Alliance & Leicester for me - and no £2000 fees. It's gone a little bit quiet on the Abbey front. However, Clydesdale did phone me yesterday saying they'd have a figure for me next week, so I think someone has been chasing them up!
    All go, huh?
