Please, please help. I've been ripped off ....

I feel so sick even typing this email. I want an Iphone and as a light user, one of the forums on here suggested buying the handset and then using it as a PAYG. I done my research on buying a factory unlocked handset as I would not be tied to a network provider and paid just under £510 for this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120484065496&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT I checked that the seller had 100% feedback and that Paypal was even suggested !! Well you can probably guess the rest, handset has not come and the seller's feedback has now gone down to 71% as other people have also been ripped off. I paid via Paypal, using my Mastercard, and have filed a dispute. When filing it I got a message at the end, saying that the buyer was not contactable ?? I am so worried now, will I get my money back ? Especially if other people are in the same situation ? I thought I had been so careful ....

Thank you for reading this, any suggestions ?

Bek

  • Hi there - I have no advice I'm afraid - perhaps you are covered my Mastercard??? I wonder if the scammer has hijacked someone else's account - as it does seem odd to have 100% feedback for so long and then disappear. Unless something awful has happened to the person.....

Stop panicking!! You are covered by paypal AND mastercard. It may take a month or two to get it back, but you will. Paypal or Matercard will have to take the sting. This has happened to the best of us!!

Escalate the dispute to a full chargeback as the seller is uncontactable. You are fully covered by paypal. If you get any problems with paypal post back here as sometimes you have to tell them there own rules
  • Hi, so sorry you have been ripped off on EBay, unfortunately a similar thing happened to me, i bought a ring for £230 and was sent an empty box,i put in a claim with Paypal and they told me to report it to the Police and send them a copy of my statement which i did but they never paid me back ,so dont think you are protected completely by them because you are not .Hopefully Mastercard will be more successful for you they should pay out, i paid in cash direct from my bank account because i was new to EBay and didnt know how to change the options of paying by creditcard.Wishing you the best of luck with your case.

The OPs case is different to yours so the two cannot be compared. You did receive an item, albeit an empty box, they didn't receive anything so it will be easier for them to get their money back.

 Well if you haven't been ripped off by the eBay merchant, then you've certainly been ripped off by Apple. You can buy a top spec laptop for that amount of money.

You can't fit it in your pocket though, can you. Or make phone calls (Skype notwithstanding, and for that you need a WAN link) :p
