As you no longer work for them I would keep the money pretend you didnt notice - its not impossible a lot of people dont check their bank accounts ( ie me before joining dfw). You could put it in a savings account for a bit so you dont worry about what would happen if they come to you for it back!!!!
I do think it would be different if you still worked for them though as you would be under contract and most contracts do state that you must let your employers know if you are overpaid.
Also they definitely cant access your account to withdraw money - your bank could not allow that under the DPA without your authority.
Good luck with it. You never know they might completely forget or they might realise and not dare approach you for it back in case they get your back up and you decide to take action against them for their shocking treatment of you.

i'd be honest with them
i got paid for time off sick in my last job and was given over £500 extra because i'd used up all my sik pay and should have been on ssp, i went to hr and told them. they said it was my line managers mistake as he hadn't filled the forms in correctly, but it was too much hassle to change so they told me i could keep it!! 4 yrs later anmd they have never asked for it back.0
