Paid twice from one job...what should I do???

Not sure if this is the right place for this but unsure where else to ask. I was on long term sick leave from my job for six months (due to severe bullying, harrassment and intimidation) then decided for my mental health it would be better to leave and find something else...well that's just what I did. I have since received a letter from the horrid job with a letter inside and a cheque explaining that this would be my full and final payment from them and what it was made up of (holiday pay to be exact). I have just checked my internet banking and have noticed that they have paid me again by bacs direct into the bank. Obviously I am aware that they are gouing to reqest this at some point but do I...
a) Phone them and tell them
b) Wait for them to get in touch and then pay it back in full
c) Wait for them to get in touch and then tell them I will pay them back at a rate I can afford over a period of months
Or worse still can they just request it back from my bank without my knowledge.
Thanks in advance...Brummie

Put it to one side and let them approach you and even then I would be as stubborn as I could be before giving it back! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

quick change bank account, run, enjoy!
or you could give it back
me myself i would wait and see what happens, could this be a quiet settlement ie teh baccs is what they owe you the cheque is a go away never darken our door no go to a tribunal by any chance,
sorry not much help just a thought can the bank stop them from taking the payment? if you no longer work there then maybe they shouldnt be able to access your account worth a try
let us know anyway

You have all said what I was thinking!! I am hoping that as it was a bacs payment they can't actually access my account for a withdrawal without my permission. I will let you know how it goes and thanks again

Do the moral thing. It isn't worth the guilt and worry not to.Debt free 4th April 2007.

I would put the money in a savings account and wait till you have to pay it back. You could pretend that you had not noticed it come into your bank as you had not looked closely at your statement. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

put the money in a savings account, get the interest. when they ask, give it back to them. you're not being dishonest, you're just managing it in a 'time-wise' fashion.MFW Newbie - #17. (#116 in 2019)

Is it not possible that the bacs was the wages for the weeks you should have worked before you left and the cheque was for holidays not used. Therefor meaning you don't owe them a penny. Heres hoping.:beer:Barclaycard 3800

If it turns out that you have been paid twice, you are duty bound to tell your previous employer, as keeping quiet constitutes theft (even though they paid you the money). If they do not do anything for approx. three months you then have a case for keeping the money, as you could claim that you are now financially dependent on the money.0

Most contract state you are obligated to pay them back if they overpay you.
Personally if I kept it I would always be waiting for them to ask for it back and worry too much. The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0
