Hi people i need some help. I currently claim incapacity benefit and my girlfreind is claiming income support and is a single parent to a new born child. I currently live with parents and have never lived in my own house but we are both wanting our own place for family reasons. I have no idea how much rent we would get payed towards private rented accomadation and what bills we would have to pay ? Rent will be most likely £400. And do we both claim housing benefit together ? Sorry for sounding so stupid but i honestly dont have any idea how the whole housing thing works as i have never lived anywhere apart from at parents. Any help and advice would be much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Privately renting Housing benefit is per property and is LHA, check the council site for their rates, you would get the 2 bed rate if over 25.
Fill in form for you + partner + child, see CAB for help if needed.
Bills =
Water
Gas
Electric
TV
Phone
Food
Travel
Council tax
Insurance
Household items

Is it your kid or will she get maintenance/CSA from the father. (Sorry that's a nosey question but you need to know whether that incase it affects any benefits etc ... they hve just stopped coutning CB towards benefits i think

Also she will stop being a single parent if you live together.
You can do benefit checks at entitled to

Sometimes you can get CAB benefits advice - in complicated situations it is often best getting advice.0 -
I would advise before you move out you do as much saving as possible just incase anything goes wrong you have some money to fall back on. You need to hind out how muh housing benefit and council tax benefit you would be entitled to and then work out if there is any shortfall between what you would need to pay. You also need to create a budget and write down everything you spend to work out if you can afford all the bills. Think very carefully and if you want things like a landline, Sky etc factor in installation costs.0

From the list of bills that defrag listed, as far as I'm aware, only your rent would be met (assuming the rent was equal or less to the LHA you are entitled to) and council tax (not sure if this is in full or in part but others will know). All other bills remain your responsibility to pay.
Your local council website and the online LHA calculators, including the Entitled To website, would help you to understand your benefit entitlements and how to apply.
If you don't have sufficient funds for a deposit, check if your local council have a deposit guarantee scheme.
Consider applying to your local council and local housing associations for social housing - they prioritise overcrowded and sick applicants, those with children.
You will also find the Shelter website helpful for explaining how Housing Benefit/LHA works and how applications for social housing are processed.
Some private landlords are reluctant to accept LHA claimants and some of those that do will only accept benefit claimants who can offer a guarantor (a home owning person with sufficient income to pay your rent if you default).0 -
