Help - Hotpoint washing machine smells

My girlfriend's Hotpoint WMA57 washing machine is under three years old but has been smelling of stagnant water for the last six months or so. The waste pipe is separate from the kitchen waste and she has tried changing from liquid detergent to powder to get around the problem. Changing to powder has slightly improved things but the smell is still there.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Does the waste run into an open stand pipe? If it does it could be something in there smelling.

When was the last time you cleaned the filter on the machine?

I have a spin drier that smells dodgy from time to time - I put a jug of water with a squirt of bleach through it.

That works - but I run it again with clean water and then only use it for whites for the next cycle.

I think it's something to do with water in the sump. If my washing machine smelled bad I'd try that first.

Good point about the filter but gf says this machine does not have one.
Not sure about the waste but have asked her to check the outflow when the machine is pumping out after a rinse.

if the standpipe/waste connection for your machine is a lot higher than the bottom of the machine then the machine waste pipe can form a u-bend trapping water when the machine isnt being used, could the sink waste be syphoning back into the machine? does your machine have a filter at the front and if so have you checked it?
