I dont use anything in mine at all. But then its rarely full unless it rains heavily or for a few hours. Only time it does keep full is in winter and when spring comes I just use it first time and give it a good clean out with hosepipe and let it drain to remove the gunk

Slightly off topic, but I saw something in one of the gardening magazines a few months back that suggested putting goldfish in your water butt to eat the larvae and contribute fish manure

Not sure the fish would like it too much!

Anyway, like Poppycat, I have never put anything in ours. Was I supposed to then?

Water in a covered butt doesn't need anything added to it, especially if you are using it regularly. You are not going to drink it, except after it has been filtered through the tissues of a plant. But hey, that also applies to cat pee and bath water, if you use the latter in a drought, so why worry?

....And compared with 'comfrey water' even the most stagnant water butt smells sweet!

A novel idea, but the surface area being quite small, you'd not want many fish. Personally, I'd worry that they'd lack food, if all they had to go on was a few midge larvae.

I do have an elderly friend, however, who designed his glasshouse with a 25' fish pool underneath the benching. He keeps roach in it!

I'm trying to recall what the name of that Scheme is whereby one can get free (or at least reduced) composters/waterbutts/ etc from one's local Council.

    Can anyone remember?

(Hoping for a cheap - or pref. free - waterbutt!):D

Sorry, Ceridwen, I don't really 'get' this blogging thing, though I read one or two occasionally. The good ones are so good, I wouldn't have the nerve to start. Here's one I like:

and I think you might like it too (or already know it.) The guy is not only good with words, but an ace photographer too. Lovely stuff!

Had a look at your blog too. Very interesting, with loads of links to things I feel I should know more about, so more time at the computer, no doubt. Thanks for the hint!
