Is this safe at all? I don't reply to any emails when people ask for my items I am selling to be posted overseas, but just got an email from someone who wants an item posted to Derby and they will pay via paypal.
I'm still wary of it though so haven't replied yet.

the majority of times, yes it will be safe to accept paypal. unless you ask for cash or a postal order you will always run the risk of the payment bouncing - cheque/paypal.
if its relatively low value go for it.2023 wins - zilch, nada, big fat duck. quack quack,0 -
Gumtree is supposed to be a face to face cash system so be careful of anyone wanting stuff posted. If you do take payment by paypal remember that you still have to adhere to all usual paypal requirements as buyer can still do an item not received claim and a fraudulent use of card claim.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I recently listed an item on Gumtree as I didn't want to pay the listing fee on eBay (expensive item!). I had about a dozen requests to pay by Paypal - and not a single one of them was to be posted to the Paypal account holder, but to someone else's address, in the UK as well as overseas.
My impression was that these scammers just go through every Gumtree advert and try it on! Fot the UK ones, in every case I offered to hand deliver the item as I 'would be passing', and would pick up the cash when I did so. Not a single one of them took me up on my kind offer, oddly enough!0
