Lawn infested with mushrooms

Quite a lot of mushrooms have suddenly appeared in my lawn - in fact they are everywhere. The trouble is I'm not sure what to do about it. They are pretty unsightly but I have heard mushrooms can be beneficial to the lawn. Should I get rid of them or leave them?

are they just rondomly placed? or are they formed in a circle with the grass a different colour forming a ring?

mushrooms will come up at this time of the year during dampness due to rotting organic matter under ground, usualy old tree roots or such, not much you can do about it, they are niether good or bad really to a lawn, just look horrible.

if they start to form in a ring though that can be a problem, called a fairy ring, you defianatly know if you have one as you get a very definate ring forming, if you do have one, get a garden fork, stab the ground through the ring itself all the way round, and poor in some water mixed with fairy liquid (as if you were doing the washing up) and also wash the fork with it as to not spread is around the garden.

i would just pick the mushrooms off and chuck them in the bin.
  • SailorSam - I don t think I'll be eating them, they are most likely poisonous.

Jony - they aren't in a ring, just scattered randomly about the lawn.

I had this same problem over the summer - someone on here recommended watering them with warm soapy water using washing up liquid which funny as it sounds actually worked and didn't kill my lawn! The mushrooms withered and away and died after I watered them with the washing up liquid concoction a few times and didn't grow back so I recommend you give it a try.

They look very much like this:

I'm still not eating them though - its not worth the risk and I don't like mushrooms anyway.
