I have split up with my partner and he has moved away with a car that i am registed the owner off, i have asked him to have it transfered into his name but he has refused and now wont even contact me. Im worried he may now have lost his driving license and that ill be held responsable if anything happens when hes driving it

How can i get the car out of my name? i dont want to get into trouble for his recklessness but have been unable to find the answer anywhere

Thanks in advance for your help

Who has got the V5. If he has got it you could get a duplicate and then do a change of owner. You could also phone DVLA and ask for their advice.

Tell DVLA that you wish to record you no longer have an interest in the vehicle. Then you will be removed. I guess you should also formally inform the current keeper what you have done, and tell them you have formally relinguished ownership of the vehicle (as far as the DVLA is concerned). Tell them to register the car in their own name - as by their actions, so far, they have already taken ownership of the vehicle. You might also mention to them that not to register the car in their own name would be an offence.

Interesting one but I'm sure DVLA must come across this fairly frequently. You need to act fairly fast because he could start racking up tickets etc.

Could it be argued that it is stolen???
  • Simply write to DVLA quoting vehicle registration mark, make and model. State that you no longer have the vehicle since x date and that you would like to be removed as keeper. You can say that your ex has car now but DVLA cannot update him as keeper without V5C or V62 application.

By writing you will be removed as keeper and get letter to confirm within 4 weeks. Write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR

  • As above just write to DVLA and tell them the car is his as of X date. I did this once as I forgot to fill in the V5 and just got a letter back from DVLA thanking me and telling me to retain the letter as proof if ever I got questioned about the car i.e. speeding tickets etc.
