MPAN is a 21 digit number.
If there is a meter number given then cross check using that.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The meter figures over 6 years are a much too wider base from which to judge your annual consumption - whilst the meter may have read zero when it was installed some time in the build process, it would not have read zero when you moved in because of the builders doing the final fix process would have been using lights, power tools and may be even industrial heaters to dry the house out.
It really is a matter of going thro' the last 5 bills, (15 months worth), to get a true annual consumption figure which is broken down into seasonal use - if you have not kept the bills, ask your supplier, who will supply copies. Because of the debt you can't change suppliers,
but with accurate annual consumption figures you can at least look at the switch sites to see how your present tariif compares, and, is there a better tariff offered by your present supplier?
With 8 of you in the house, you could indeed be burning 27 units a day, (It's funny how kids think that switches only have an 'ON' function - maybe it's time to split the bills 8 ways!), but it's not unknown for even new houses to have wiring faults and if you can'tget the use down by 'educating' the family, I would suggest getting a local electricain in to test the wiring
    Best of Luck

Thanks :) I have some bills to hand:

1 jun 09 to 1 sep 09 (actual readings) 2417 units (tumble drier not on once due to good weather, bbqs, away for a week but children home on summer hols in august)
2 sep 08 - 1 dec 08 (actual readings) 2596 units (would have had tumble drier on lots as kids had lots of tummy bugs this autumn, it is ingrained on my memory!)

and an older bill from 2007
5/3rd to 8/6th 2160 units actual readings again

Have got almost all bills filed, will pull them out and g through them.

We've had some really odd things with energy companies since we moved here though, EDF sent me a bill with charges for £10,000 applied then removed, have sent me bills for houses we don't own, completely incomprehensible gas bills etc :rotfl:

I live in a 5 bedroom detached with just my wife - our electricity usage was 6800kwh for the past 12 months; looking back a few years when my twin daughters were living at home we were using ~ 8500kwh so it is entirely possible that a household of 8 people could use 10000kwh.

I know you said you have gas heating but do you have baths only or do you have a shower installed as well? With so many people, showering could eat up a heck of alot of energy.
  • This is a handy site for posting weekly readings:

    www.imeasure.org.uk

While you might avoid using the oven you might benefit from batch cooking or a slow cooker or using a lid when cooking.

Most clothes washes can be done on 30C and will save a fair bit too.

If you can get hold of an old style spinner on freecycle / freegle it might save a fair bit on tumble drying.

Assuming your using a shower, a timer might be worth considering too - I'm not sure if you can get these as freebies somewhere.

at first I thought that was crazy high but for 8 people with 4 tv's it may not seem so crazy.

My advice same as others get one of those meters, and turn things off to try and see what is using the most. Your readings all look consistent suggesting it is legitimate use.

Possible faulty meter. but I am not convinced with it been a household of 8 people.

10,000 Kw/h per year for a family of 8 is by no means a stretch. I manage that (a little more actually) and I live on my own. But I do have that Hot Tub and style lighting ;) I also run my own Internet servers from home to save paying hosting costs elsewhere, so what I save with one hand I pay out with another.

Baths mostly, all but one of the children are between 5 and 10 years old :)

Thankyou so much for all the tips and advice I appreciate it :)
