it's in December, but it doesn't give an exact date so best just keep an eye on the website http://www.saas.gov.uk/student_support/travel_expenses.htm#claim

Most people usually do it around January, probably because it's after the Christmas/New Year holidays.

Last year SAAS started accepting claims from the 15th of December.
Remember, if you are prompt in getting your claim in on the first day, your money will be with you before Christmas, if you leave it until after the new year, it takes far longer (in my experience).
Mine was in my account on the 21st of December last year.

So if I am reading it corrrectly, my DD will not be entitled to any travelling expenses as she lives with in walking distance of her Uni. the cost of travelling home at weekends is £12/£14 but she is only allowed to claim for two two return trips each semister.

    Is this correct?

As far as I understand it yes. Travel expenses are largely for those who commute (thereby sacrificing the higher loan rate given to those living away from home) and for those living at university a return expense is allowed.

You can clain half now, they dont ask u to prove financial hardship

If you are suffering financial hardship, you may apply when you start your course or during the first term for an early payment of 50% of your expenses. If you want an advance payment, you must contact us with details of how much you spend on travel every week or month. We will pay your advance straight into your bank account
