Can anyone advise - my dad is having a new bathroom fitted, he is swapping from a bath to a shower, and also needs a new toilet and sink.
I have been looking round for him, and have noticed that most new toilets seem to be a lot smaller than the one he already has... (an old armitage shanks suite) - many look like they would be better suited to a cloakroom than a main bathroom.
...as he will have more space than he has now he does not need smaller pieces, and as he is getting on a bit he does not want anything that is low, small or not easy to use....
So, I am looking for a toilet and sink that are on the large side, but cannot find any - can anyone advise me please!
White and plain is fine!
I looked at Armitage Shanks website, and this looks similar in styling to what he has now, but am not reallysure where the measurements are 'from' and 'to', if that makes any sense!

thanks in advance

The pans are still the same size, but modern cisterns are smaller than the old ones..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
Go in and have a chat with your local plumbers merchant. You'll get better service and a quicker solution than trawling teh interwebz. Above poster is correct - its the cisterns that are smaller now mainly because of reduced capacity to meet water usage targets.

Have a look at plumbworld stuff but on ebay. We recently bought a suite (loo and basin) that retails for nearly £600 for £62 (+£39.99 p&p)
It is from the cubic range and is rather substantial looking - we are really pleased with it. Make sure you go through ebay though as on their site it is a lot more,0 -
I said this to the plumbing merchant who looked at me as if I'd gone senile. Quite certain that I hadn't, I took to carrying a tape measure around with me and taking the pertinent measurements of the toilet bowls in pubs. hotel, DIY centres and the homes of all our friends and relations.
As a result of this research we discovered any modern toilet bowls are up to 20cm lower than vintage models, and since I got my titanium hips this disparity causes problems for me.
There is wide variation in the size and shape of the bowl and the "one size fits all" toilet seats sold in the DIY places do not fit all by an means.
We found what we needed at a reclamation yard. It is a good 9 centimetres higher than the 40cm which seems to be the current modern standard in this country but still slightly shorter than the cracked one it replaced.
The semi retired plumber who fitted it for us told us that toilets have indeed been shrinking in line with the smaller and smaller bathroom sizes in new builds. Baths and sinks have shrunk too.0 -

yep, thanks, I thought so!
I have only measured the loo here and at my dad's house, but mine is slightly smaller than his, and when I went to a bathroom showroom yesterday all the loos looked to be significantly smaller than my dads 1970's model!
We assumed it was because all these new build houses are of toy town proportions! A lot of them are very narrow and compact too, and seem to be quite poor quality, with plastic seats that don't quite fit the pot properly etc..
I am on a quest to get hold of a decent sized toilet by a week on monday... wish me luck! (I will be off out with my tape measure too, nutsohazelnuts!!)
I will have a look at the cubic range slummymumy, thanks - if anyone else has any suggestions please do let me know!0 -

Best of luck. Logically lavatory pans should have got bigger over the last few decades to cope with the increasing size of the nation's backsides.
Can't say I've notice any difference in size between my new one year old pan and my very early Victorian pan in my previous house.
I'm sure you'll find something that suits your dad sand perhaps a high one could be easier for him to use..................
