Financial and legal advice needed

I'm hoping someone is able to give me some advice. Last month I was evicted from my home for an outstanding council tax bill from 2004. I wasn't aware of this debt until the eviction as the debt was in my partners name and he didn't tell me as he didn't want to worry me and didn't seek legal advice at the time (he realises that this was a big mistake). Back in 2004, this was then passed to another company for his bankruptcy and who have been processing this since. We have no mortgage arrears, we have equity in the house and the house is in joint names and we are not married. The trustees have been to court, got a charge on the house and are now trying to force us to sell.

The original debt was for £3,753 and over the past 5 years this had risen and risen. On the morning of the eviction, I called the trustees and found out that the debt had risen to £60k but the lady had to speak to her manager and would call me back. When she did, the manager advised me that it was now £87k. He also advised me that there was an offer of £12k to end the dispute about 5/6 months ago, but my partner panicked and didn't pay. This has now been pulled from the table and they now wanted the full amount, but as good will, they will reduce the fees to around £45k. To allow us to get back in the house, they want a payment of £12k within 24hrs and the remainder amount within 2wks. I arranged for the £12k to be paid, this was done within 48hrs and have applied for a remortgage for the remainder. I have not asked for a breakdown as I am worried that I will put their back up, as I know that my partner had had a number of heated conversations with them and all I want to do is keep my home and scared and not sure what direction I should be taking.

I have had some email communication, trying to reduce the fees and they have agreed to £40k and the deal is now extended to the 2nd November. After this email I found out from an out of office that the the main contacts at this company are now off until Monday. In one of the emails they wanted proof of funds, I emailed them saying that I was applying for a remortgage and sent them a copy of the letter, but they havn't yet answered my question. I'm hoping to get a response from the trustee on Monday.

In the meantime, this week, I recevied a letter from the the VOA confirming that my property had been banded incorrectly and should of been the band lower so the council now owe me money and the original debt should never of been that amount.

Is there anyway I can take this back to the court? I am aware that my partner has left this too late and that there has been a lot of fault on his behalf, but I'm hoping that as I have received this letter, there is something on ourside that we can do.

I have children, the eldest one is starting senior school next year and has a test in a couple of weeks and this is just going to have such a bad effect on her. I am really desperate for some advice. Does anyone have any?

Where did all these charges come from, doesn't sound right and sounds like a debt collection company trying it on?

As above you need legal advice fast and not on a forum.
