Off Topic, But Missing Dog

Hiya,
I am more of a lurker than a poster but am hoping someone can help me.
We have two small dogs, a Cairn and a Pom. The Pom is actually a cross and worth very little but to look at him he looks like a pure breed.
Anyhow, last night around 6pm my partner left them both in the back garden and when he went to let them back around 8pm the Pom was missing.
Our garden has a six foot fench round it and the gate is always padlocked shut. The gate was open and the padlock was no where to be seen. No one needs to walk past my garden as it doesn't lead anywhere.
I can't understand why the dogs didn't bark as they always do. At first we thought kids had maybe let them loose but the other dog was still there and that wouldn't explain why the padlock is missing.
I live in the Greenisland, Carrickfergus, Newtownabbey area so if anyone hears anything please get in touch with me.
Thanks and I hope someone somewhere can help me.

I have phoned the police and the dog warden but they don't seem to hold out much hope.

i really do feel for you, but you must try not to assume they have gone for one particular reason - try every avenue you can and never give up.
contact not only the police, but also any local/community bobbies you have. put up posters locally in shops, on lamposts etc with picture and phone number (don't offer reward). ask neighbours to check outbuildings/garages etc. put food outside your house as well as something that smells familiar to them eg. your slippers, their bed etc.
i know it sounds silly, but even try something like 'positive visualisation' - there are websites devoted to what to do to try and find your pet, google missing dog.
phone the rspca, local vets and animal sancturaries.
good luck x
Have you read "The Secret"? Similar idea and it really does work - to the OP try to stay positive and I really do hope you get the dog back. I really feel for you but am miles away so not much practical use I'm afraid!
We have left the back gate open now and his food dish with a small amount of food in it, also his fav blankie in the kennel.
It can help to fib slightly on the poster...saying that he is ill and needs daily medication can make him less desirable to keep.
I really hope you find him soon, you must be worried sick.
(Have also sent you a PM)
