Another victim of the recession. Thoughts?

Supermarket wine buyers just get better and better. Independant wine sellers/vitners have a little more ''feel'' for people who don't care for supermarket wine. The only time I can remember popping into a traditional chain offlicence is on route to someone else's home...poor planning ahead. Somehow we always seem to be near a Nicolas rather than a threshers:confused: (isn't that owned by threshers though?)

I find it hard to believe that as a nation we are buying less booze.

I have always found Threshers expensive for what they are. I only ever used the one round the corner from Central station on a odd Friday night.

EDIT I think that was Oddbins

You are single-handedly wrecking the economy. You should be ashamed

I leave the country, suddenly the pubs start closing and off license chains start going bust.

    Coincidence? You decide...

The problem with Threshers is that they were too big to sell interesting wine but too small to compete with Tesco. If the overtime and bonuses are flowing then you don't necessarily mind paying a couple of quid for convenience. When times are hard however you hit Tesco for the BOGOFs and the 89p Value cider.
  • Supermarkets are much cheaper and general corner shops typically have a good selection of chilled beer.

Threshers & Wine Rack are too expensive, and I don't like their "buy three to get the items reduced to the normal price" offers.
I might fancy picking up a bottle on the way home from work, but the pricing and "deal"s put me off.
Their product is exactly the same as the supermarkets, so there is no incentive to go to them and pay more.

    Agree with all the above....

I buy cases at a time from Tesco Direct. I keep an eye on their site and wait for my favourites to come on offer then buy 8 or 10 cases at a time.

This can often be a third of the cost of the same product in Threshers etc.

In a few years time we might be debating the demise of Kwiks of Fords or Evans Halshaw. I can see the headline now.

"We just couldn't compete with Tesco Motors, or Aldi Clunkers" said a spokesman for the struggling car retailer.

It's a commodity lifestyle nowadays. Paying premium for personal service doesn't really feature much any more.
