Vaporate, whats happened to your signature. You were so proud to support the BNP.
No so proud anymore?0 -
Well, I'm all for quality service, but picking a bottle off a shelf isn't rocket science! In a few years time we might be debating the demise of Kwiks of Fords or Evans Halshaw. I can see the headline now.
"We just couldn't compete with Tesco Motors, or Aldi Clunkers" said a spokesman for the struggling car retailer.
It's a commodity lifestyle nowadays. Paying premium for personal service doesn't really feature much any more.
Anyway, my point was more that it would be as good or better for the shop to sell 3 individual bottles of wine and have those people come back than to sell one lot of three.
I think it's called "footfall".0 -
Well I'm very proud to support MS in my signature (although slightly confusingly we're against it).
All donations gratefully accepted.
Good for you, Mrs M has relapse remitting MS, she was diagnosed at 25.
We hold on to the hope that Adult Stem cell research will develop enough in our lifetime to be reliable and help a little.
There was an interesting program on during the week called Fix Me which skirted on this subject, it's on the iPlayer here:-

Yes, I saw the programme, very interesting. Did feel for the poor little salamanders who kept having their little limbs removed, though. Anyway, I just hope that it all leads to some major advances. It did seem to be really ground-breaking. Good luck to Mrs M.

Trade Link to story on 28th Oct though there is a newer one.
The comments from staff below it seem to suggest it was badly run and had lost it's way.
Ones like this........
And good luck with the new treatments AM.Martin Garside | 28-Oct-2009 5:34 pm
My partner works as a branch manager (I was also in the trade as a manager myself in the past) and I have seen the decline of the First Quench group since it conception. Her shop was one of the most profitable in the country but was slowly knocked back as the company chopped and changed shop themes and policies.
Little or no support was given for branches, such as opposing new competition opening. Allowing the shops to degrade to the point it was uncomfortable for shopper to be in the shop (to hot caused by too many cooler and no forced ventilation, such as extractor fans, air con). Changing the shop to convenience style, this failed when tried a few years ago, little or no stock control.
All this rest squarely on the senior management shoulders for not listening to the front line work force. This shop could be very profitable again if it was reverted back to Victoria Wine (as it’s still known as Vicky wine locally).
Reduce the sweets & crisp down to a basics offer a good range of basic wines at a favorable price and multi pack beers again at a keen price and this shop could be back up to taking £150K in the Christmas weeks. Christmas Eve alone I recall a fig of £20K being talked about in the past with people queuing along the street to get served. All this was thrown away by inept and indifferent senior management.
Unsuitable or offensive?

26 YRS I worked for that company until they took away all the creative spirit that I had and made my store a clone. My store was the most profitable in Scotland due to our insight to what sells and what punters wanted. They stopped that insight and guess what? now times that by 1000 stores? no wonder they are where they are.
My main concern is my pension is tied up with those cowboys.0 -

That's very true.
Every where I have lived there is a little shop or more that sells lots of alcohol plus other convenient products. Even the petrol stations I go into now sell alcohol.
The issue is that Threshers etc didn't move with the times. I remember going in to one to buy alcohol plus snacks a couple of years ago, but they didn't have any suitable snack products so I went further down the road.....I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Agree with all the above....
I buy cases at a time from Tesco Direct. I keep an eye on their site and wait for my favourites to come on offer then buy 8 or 10 cases at a time.
This can often be a third of the cost of the same product in Threshers etc.
I take advantage of Sainsbury's free internet deliveries on orders over £100 (Tues to Thurs). They frequently have various wine offers available. Although I haven't seen the 25% off for buying 6 or more bottles for about a year now. Last time that appeared it coincided with 33% off my favourite red wine, so I bought what I thought was a years supply ie about a 100 bottles (100 bottles is a years supply because I also drink white and sparkling wine and beer too, yes I know I need to cut down).Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

I'm sorry to hear about your wife and it was a pleasure today to see 10,000 people riding in aid of MS Australia. Between us we raised over $2,500,000 so that was pretty good.
Unfortunately I can't use iPlayer in Aus as it's blocked. I can get radio but not TV.0
