I think they deliberately only employ staff who are grumpy and want to turf customers out early

Their staff at any branch I have ever visited are without fail grumpy, Ladbrokes are okish and Corals are generally very friendly and chatty.

You will see what I mean when you join, no doubt they are friendly to the other staff they are just grumpy with the customers
  • Ive never really been in will hill much to be honest... my local ladbrokes dont even speak to each other nevermind the customers, lol...

My friend worked for William Hill for a few months. He liked the staff, but it was a difficult environment to work in - depending on where you're based, partly - as you can really get some dodgy characters coming in. You see a lot of people gambling away their wages, and when people lose money (which happens a lot) emotions run high - they once had someone smash a chair against one of the fruit machines.

You're expected to be able to understand and process bets very quickly - like when a horse or dog race is about to start and punters start rushing to the counter, and some of them can get very impatient.

I think at the end of it the environment just got a bit too much for him - the people losing their money, the pressure, the tension, the occasional violence...

I used to work there when I was at uni.

Evening work tends to be bigger in summer when there are evening races due to the daylight. It tended to slow down at winter a bit.

A lot depends on the area in which you work.

I worked at variousd branches - not sure if any of these are near you.

Wembley - lots of lowlifes, spent half my time emptying their smuggled tins of skol into the gutter. Manager had to implement a 5p minimum bet rule.

Stonebridge- slightly worse than wembley - first time i had ever seen special lights put in the toilets to stop people shooting up.

Burnt Oak - Reasonable - working class punters but treated you ok if you were fair with them.

Hendon - Only worked here a few times - Big money gamblers - We would take more money in an evening there than we took in a week at Wembley (often with only 3 or 4 people in the shop) Really nice place to work.

Edgeware - Similar to Hendon - No stress, nice punters, no threats to stab, shank, glass, or shoot you (which you got daily at Wembley and Stonebridge)

When you start they will try it on big style - last second bets (often placed after the race has ended. Ambiguous numbers ie a 3 that could be a 5 or an 8. Funnily the number they meant is always the winning one.

Dont make friends with them - they are addicts and your their dealer. The relationship is not one of love.

As a rule of thumb the higher the counter the worse the punters.
If its a bulletproof screen then probably pass on the job.

    Cheers

I once lost a grand in William Hill. I never darkened the door of a bookies again after that!
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

I put 11/2 on you getting a good job there.

Sorry, couldn't resist :) Good luck!
  • When I worked in a bookies we got annoyed when someone only wanted to do nights or weekends as why should they get preferential shifts and when there's only 5max to a shop its not fair.no night racing in winter months but opening times stil 9-9.30 except for sundays 11-6.and in reference to the person who quit caus of "pressure" of course your expected to be quick and would realise this happens on day one and its not personal when the punter moans at u.would you start blubbering if you worked at asda and someone said the meals are ×××× lol bookies in general get a bad name when peoples perceptions of them are a lot different to what they really are
