Out of office email help

Options
I was wondering whether it is possible to create an automatic email reply while I am away on holiday. I understand this feature can be carried out in outlook express, but it seems to only work whilst my computer is online which is no good to me. If not, is there any web based email accounts that has this autoresponder feature, thanks.

Googlemail can do this me thinks.

How do I set up an automatic vacation response?
Going on vacation? No access to the Internet? No problem! Use Google Mail's vacation responder to let people know that you will not be able to get back to them right away.
You can set up a vacation response in your Google Mail account that will automatically reply to anyone who emails you. While the vacation responder is enabled, Google Mail will send a response to anyone who contacts you.* If that person contacts you again after four days and your vacation responder is still enabled, Google Mail will send another vacation response to remind the person that you are away from your email.

Here is how to let people know that you cannot respond right away:

Log in to your Google Mail account.
Click 'Settings' along the top of any Google Mail page.
From the 'General' tab, select 'Vacation responder on' in the 'Vacation responder:' section.
Enter the subject and body of your message in the 'Subject:' and 'Message:' fields (you can also use the default message).
If you have enabled a personalised signature in your account, Google Mail will automatically append it to the bottom of your vacation response.
Tick the box next to 'Only send a response to people in my Contacts' if you do not want everyone who emails you to know that you are away from your mail.
    Click 'Save Changes.'
While the vacation responder is enabled, you will see a banner across the top of your Google Mail account displaying the subject of your vacation response. To stop Google Mail from automatically sending the response, click 'end now' within the banner. Or if you would like to edit the response, click 'vacation settings.'
Keep in mind that your vacation response will start over each time that you edit it. If someone receives your initial vacation response and then emails you again after you have edited the subject or body of the message, he or she will receive the edited response, too.
    * Messages classified as spam and messages addressed to a mailing list to which you subscribe to will not receive a vacation response.

Have you checked whether your existing email provider will allow you to do this?

Thanks for the info but I'm a bit confused. What do you actually mean by PM my email to ask for an invite? Invite for what?. I just assumed I need to sign up to a new email account by logging in to a website

That means send a PM (Private Message) to whoever has an invite and in that PM include your email address, Click here to send a PM to niceguyrichy

You can just as easily click under the username you wish to PM (Send Private message)

    Gmail is by invitation only.

Be careful about the message you send - effectively you'll be telling the world that your house is unoccupied for x weeks!

I would never use an out of office message for home e-mail, I dont believe anything is that important, unless of course you are running a business from home,

    Do you get spam?

If so, then your Out Of Office reply message will be sent back to the spammer, thus confirming that he (or she) has found a valid address -- yours.

This makes your email address more valuable when sold on to yet more spammers...

The feature should be renamed, "Oh, please spam me more and more -- I love it! Oh, go on, please!" (but it's not so snappy as Out Of Office)...
