I had a cat C write-off; just carried on driving it as normal; insurance carried on. When the tax was due for renewal, I took my documents plus V5 into the post office and told them the renewal notice hadn't come; bought another year's tax no problem. As I understand it, you only need it VIC checked if it passes to a new owner because the new owner will not be able to get a new V5 until the car has been VIC checked. If its just a case of the existing owner keeping it then I do not think a VIC check is mandatory; but I may be wrong.

I thought they flagged it as a cat c on the dvlc database which stopped you re taxing it until the flag is removed by the vic
  • in my view if you thought that your vehicle is repairable why didnt you ask your insurers for a second opinion privided that you selected the repairer you didnt say weather that you still posess the car or that insurers collected it and took it to their local approved repairer? in either case if you dipute any finding of your insurance company regarding repairs your intitled to take it to your own repair shop for a quote on the damged area then contact them on the quote to see if theyre prepared to pay it. insurers tried to write off my bro in laws saxo this year but the only damage on the car was wing, grill ,bumper, headlamp, cross member he refuted that it was a write off trailored the car away to another insurer aproved garage had a second opinion and got the quote rung them with the quote wich was £800 under their quoted price the insureres aproved repairs to be carried out and the car isnt listed as a cat c write off .
  • Hi guys,
If I can be more specific, it was damage the o/s front wing, a dent the size of half a foorball, and the windscreen was smashed, I was told by the old bill not to drive it, so the insurance towed it to their approved repairer, 2 days later the repair company called me and said the insurance is writing it off as a cat c not ecenomical to repair. I was shocked, they also told me to collect my goods from the car as after 24hours it gets towed to storage, I asked what options I had and the repair company said if I came to collect the car they were under obligation to hand it over, I then arranged the windscreen to be fixed and I drove the car home.

The next day after not having heard a word from my insurers, I rang them, emailed my service records and mot, then I was offered a settlement, I asked what happens to my existing insurance as the anniversary was August, was told it would still run, I then offered to buy back the car, was told company policy and was charged 25%, this all accepted and sorted, was told the cheque will be in the mail.

Now I was asking, who does the cat C as I have all the documents and car (it would pass an mot immediately, nothing wrong) does the insurance continue as mentioned by the claims chap, and am I allowed to drive the car without blue lights behind me from the NPR... I have done the vehicle check online at DVLA and there is nothing there about cat C yet?

    Thanx
  • Thanx guys, sorted, still cannot believe the write off bit. Might cost me £300 to fix with some added hassle but well worth it.
