A graduate earning £22,000 will pay back £630 pa on their student loan. Considering many students will leave university with loans of over £20,000 plus interest it's easy to see how many of them won't ever pay the whole thing back.

Although many people will earn more than this in the future, this has to be balanced out with periods of redundancy,child rearing, caring resposibilities and further training; during all of which interest will be accruing.
