Modern gas boilers are claimed to be 90% efficient but that is almost certainly optomistic. Also there could be additional losses from pipework under floors fro example but nevertheless tha gas will stilll be significantly cheaper than electricity.
A heat pump will probably give you about twice the heat per kWh of electricity but it is still a new field domestically and there would obviously be the installation cost to consider.0 -
I always though gas was cheaper,
But,
I did a test, and ran a gas fire and a 2kwh electric fire for the same amount of time.
They both gave of about the same amount of heat and cost about the same amount to run,
This is because the gas fire used an equivalent of 6kwh, and the electric fire only 2kwh. Gas is about 1/3 the price per Kwh as electricity, but appears to use 3 times as much for the same heat output.
This could be that gas fires are less efficient than electric fires, or perhaps the conversion factors for gas from cu feet or meters to kwh that the energy companies use are wrong.
Or perhaps my gas fire is inneficient, but it is reasonably new.

"The unit cost £925 which is comparable to a boiler, but I now don't have servicing costs, didn't have to pay a CORGI engineer to fit it and will benefit from much lower bills going forward."
"I took the plunge and replaced the old gas boiler - with an Air to Water Heat Pump!
Best investment ever! It is only a 5KW pump, but is maintaining the temperatures in my 2 bed bungalow with no problems at all. I leave it running 24/7 and let it do it's thing. It is costing £1.50 - £2 a day to run which compares very favourably (cheaper to run!) with my Gas bills of approx £200 a Quarter"
