Tenants: Landlords have to protect deposit .

If you are a tenant your deposit should be protected by law since April 2007 . only for (AST) Assurd Shorthold Tenancy signed after April 2007
AST's renewed after April 2007 may be considered too.
Under the government's Deposit Scheme the landlord HAS to by law register the deposit with certain government backed schemes, look at direct dot gov dot uk
(search "deposit scheme") the money has to be put into a client account and not be used as part of their assets. The Landlord must do this 14 days of taking the deposit. You can ask the landlord to provide this information within 14 days.
If they haven't secured it and they try to get you out with a possession order the Courts can demand the Landlord pay compensation to the tune of 3 times the amount of your deposit.
