Make an official request under the data protection act. You should be able to get statements for the past 6 years and they can charge you a maximum of £10.

Tell them they have 40 days to send the statements, and if you do not receive them in that time, then you will report them to the information commissioner.

I agree, some dozy bank cashier probably couldn't be bothered!

The above is correct, records must be kept for at least six years, for reasons like the tax man may want to investigate you..What are barclays gonna say, 'sorry we've deleted them' err I think not!

They should still be able to get copy statements but if not they can certainly get you copy ledgers which are exactly the same but on plain paper instead of fancy bank statement paper. There is usually a charge for copy statements and ledgers but ledgers are less expensive.

If your council want actual statements then you need to go into Barclays and offer to pay for copy statements up front. The problem is that the bank charges for statements but as you no longer have an account they can't guarantee that you will pay for them if they order them.

I'm an existing customer of Barclays & they recently charged me £5 each for copies of my bank statements which I needed for my mortgage application.

Had a thought about banks charging excessive amounts for old bank statements and rather than starting a new thread I thought i'd pop it in here:

If they try to charge £5 per copy, can you not request them all as part of Data Protection Act and just pay the nominal fee (£10 i think?)?

You can request the transactions which make up your statements (e.g. the personal data that makes up the statement). They have no obligation to provide that data on statement paper, nor in statement format. Most banks will, however, provide a statement on a DPA request because it's easier.

As an aside - there's an obligation under the DPA that all personal information is removed on request. I wonder who wins in a competition between tax man requiring 6 year records and customers requesting all personal information be erased from system.

    Really?
  • a lot of the banks now are around £5 per request NOT sheet, I'd maybe check with the branch manager - any reason for not having the originals they sent? - I always thought you needed at least 3 years for tax purposes

Jimmy Mumu - did you not keep any copies at all of your last 12 months bank statements (either ones received in post or print-offs from the net)?

If you have some at least, you may not have to pay so much - I think my bank (First Direct) charge £5 per statement, but havent' yet requested any.

Good luck with it and let us know if you get them all for a tenner!
