oil leak from chair

My desk chair has leaked oil from the hydraulic part onto my carpet in several places (I didn't notice for a day or two).
The chair came from Staples in 2003. The carpet is about ten years old, and I've got the worst of the stains out, so this isn't about compensation. More of a warning really - I thought these chairs were usually 'gas lift', and wasn't aware of the potential problem.
But if it had been a priceless oriental rug...would Staples be liable after six years?
How can I know that a replacement chair won't also leak in time?

I would be surprised if staples could be held liable after 6 years. There is a limit to how long a supplier can be held liable for. Try and claim from your home contents insurers for the carpet.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Most of them have a little seepage of oil (its very black as well!) and its a good idea to frequently wipe off the excess leakage to inspect it at the same time for any increase.
Have to tried to dab the carpet with biological washing powder diluted in warm water? A strong solution can also remove oil stains from driveways especially tarmac without damage) but do test on a hidden bit of carpet first to ensure it'll not leave a faded patch.0 -
