Hi
We are hoping to start on a self build in the next year or so. I want to be prepared by the time I go to the architect, so want your experience of things you like or would like in your house. For example, (might be silly, but still worth thinking about)

- Laundry chute from upstairs to utility room?
- Switch for external light in bedroom, for easy access if hear noise during night
- Cabling for wired internet access in all rooms

Definitely networking in every room
My dad's self build he just completed has the 7.1 surround sound speakers recessed into the wall, with all cabling traced in. TV mounted on the wall with trunking behind the wall fo all of the cables which lead to the Sky box etc.
Underfloor heating?
Network points in every room. I know i said it twice, but it's that important to me!!He who laughs last, thinks slowest0 -

Underfloor heating is on the list, but needs a lot more research0 -
Plenty of sockets...sounds obvious but it's something that drives me nuts, never enough sockets in the right place
(I'd also be tempted to try and get the living room onto a separate circuit, and the same for the kitchen sockets, not just the cooker, so both the sockets + cooker in the kitchen are on their own rings*)
Re the network wiring, remember to run pairs of wires (although not quite so important if it's in conduit so can be replaced easier).
*that way the fridge/freezer can be left on even if you have to turn the power off to the rest of the downstairs etc.0 -

If it's a big house, one idea my uncle put in his new big house was vacuum points in each room. My aunty just carries round a tube and nozzle from room to room and fits it in each room in turn, all the dust hoovers up, whizzes around these tubes in the wall and ends up in a big bin!! HOwever it is a big house (3 storeys, 5 kids) and they do live in Canada, I've never heard of it in this country...
also, garbage disposal unit in the kitchen sink. no more scraping crap out into the bin, it can all wash down the sink!0
