Buildings and contents for first time buyers

Options
My partner and I are currently buying a house and need to get buildings and contents insurance - I've looked on loads of websites and we've had some obscenly high quotes as we're FTB's and are there for deemed risky! Can anyone recommend a company that does reasonable buildings and contents insurance for FTB's?

Thanks

are you having a mortgage if so try your mortgage company,ok normally more expensive BUT as they part own the house with you it is in their interest to keep things up to scratch

  • We went with Budget insurance and found it £100 cheaper plus we got £25 cashback earlier this year via topcashback

I did get quotes from other places but they seemed cheap

Since when have FTB's been deemed risky? Whoever told you this, needs to have a word with themselves. My first Building and contents policy wasn't much more than it is now. (I'm not convinced that my claim free history has offered any reduction in cost). Looking at my parents home insurance prices convinces me that NCB's are a gimmick.

I think your problem may be either the area, property or the values you are trying to insure. not the fact the your FTB's.

Firstly are you trying to insure the rebuild cost of the property or the sale value? What kind of voluntary excess are you applying and what extras are you getting and do you need them?

If it's any help, my cheapest insurer when I was a FTB was directline, who offered me £186 for the year, on a 3 bed semi with detached garage, in Leeds with 20K contents. I also got £60 Quidco.

    Hi thanks for the replies

Dreamypuma I meant risky in a sense that we havent had any buildings or contents insurance before so they cant see if we have made lots of claims before etc.

We were aiming to reinsure for the rebuild value and the vol excess was £100, no extras though!

I will try directline and Budget tomorrow (thanks BargainGalore)

You are only an increased risk yourself if you have committed a criminal act i.e. fraud which they ask you about.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    Tia,

    Try increasing your excess?

ours is set at £250 and this makes your quote cheaper but obviously if you do come to claim you have to fork out a bit more.

    moneysupermarket are great.

    Hi

Olly300 - neither of us have ever committed a criminal act so maybe I was doing something wrong on the website!

I tried Budget and Directline but they were that much cheaper than all the other quotes we'd had. The Co-op have quoted us £207 a year for buildings and contents, by far the cheapest so far.

VKay thanks for that, I might go back and alter the excess and see if that brings any quotes cheaper than the Co-ops.
  • i dont think quidco offer any cashback now on directline??
