BT equipment fault, not line fault

I've just connected to O2 broadband but was having problems with the speed. They told me to remove the cover from the BT master socket & plug the broadband filter into the test socket.
Did that & hey presto, broadband speed jumps up. They tell me it's a fault with the equipment. It's not a line fault or fault of O2.
Do I call a BT engineer to fix the problem or is there someone else I can get in. And what do you think the cost is likely to be?
Please advise

You mean you plugged your router into the BT test socket? This indicates that there is a fault on your extension wiring, not with your PC or router (since presumably you did the test with the same equipment)?
Are you normally connecting wirelessly or by ethernet?
BT will charge you a minimum of £125 call out, because the fault is on your side of the master socket, so it's your responsibility. Much cheaper to get a local telecoms engineer in to have a look
Could be a faulty ADSL filter, try changing them in turn.
You need to post your speeds to give us a little more info-how much faster is your speed via the master socket?
Could be a wireless issue if connecting wirelessly, a bad connection in the extension wiring, too long a cable from extension to master...you need to work through them one by one really. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Oh thanks for the reply.
Yes have plugged directly into the BT test socket. I don't have any extension cables. When the cover is on, the broadband filter (same is ADSL right?) is plugged directly into it. That's why I'm wondering it it's just a faulty cover.
Speed via test socket is nearly 11meg & with the cover on is just under 3meg.
Any suggestions?
Thanks0 -
First you need to rule out a faulty filter. O2 supply 2 or 3 with the router, swap it. I also suggest you unplug the phone temporarily to rule out any interference from that.
Do you maybe have a Sky Box?-if so that must also be filtered also.
Please confirm if you are using wireless or ethernet from the router. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Have just swopped the ADSL with the other one that came in the box & it's worked. Speeds now 10 download & 1 upload. (Not actually sure what upload & downloads mean). But looks like it's fixed. Can't believe it was just a faulty ADSL when they're both new & I've just received them.
BTW - Am wireless but even using the ethernet earlier didn't make any difference.
Thank you very much macman for your help & saving me lots of money0 -
Glad it worked ! I'm just amazed BT didn't ask you to swap them -normally their tech support is pretty good.
The filters are bought cheap in by the thousand and some inevitably are not 100%. They can also degrade once in use.
You're getting only 2MBps more on the Premium service than the near 8MBps you'd probably get on the Standard service, may not be worth the extra for another 2MBps.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Yes, I am thinking of downgrading to the 8MBps instead now. Seems a waste of money if I can't get close to 20MBps.0

When I ordered O2 the other week I was told I can get 14Mbps however I know for a fact my line is 6.5Mbps.On ADSL-2,I'm getting between 6-9Mbps while my line is bedding in.
NEVER EVER believe the speed your ISP tells you you can get!! Check yourself!0
