Goods left in porch but nowhere to be seen?!

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if I have posted this is the correct section or not but I desperately need someones help here. I have ordered some expensive jewelry by credit card on Tuesday for delivery on Wednesday, however the company would only deliver the goods to the card holders address (home). Due to work commitments I couldn't be home to accept the goods, so I spoke to the courier company who advised me to leave a note on my door my signature and they would leave the goods in a safe place.
Then yesterday when I got home I had received a calling card from the couriers explaining that the goods were left in the front porch to my house. I have searched high and low and there's no delivered item there at all. I don't know if someones noticed the note prior to the couriers (post man, milk man whatever) and decided to go back and take my item, or something like that. I'm heartbroken because it looks like i've had these items stolen from me.
I called the company to explain and they've basically said to me, the note i've left on the door means I am responsible for what has happened. They're not willing to compensate on the item, or send me a replacement. Is that it now, shall I just learn from my mistake? I'm thinking of reporting the item to the police... I'm so angry at myself for letting this happen.
Thanks
Michael

I'm sorry it's happened. It could have been anyone. Even the courier taking advantage.
In case you don't get the response on here, there are similar cases on the consumer forum so someone might beable to help. http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/ Hope it works out.0
