    when i went last year i used my nationwide card and was not charged at all.
    not sure if they charge or not now

    The best debit card is definitely Nationwide... They now pass on some charges in some countries (from VISA), but these are only 0.84%!!! which is still the lowest on the market...
    And you get very good exchange rate, so that will also make up for this charge..

    I wrote first and then looked for the link - last time I've been abroad it was just 0.84%..

    Even with the 1% VISA charge Nationwide is still the best debit card, or Cumberland BS if you live in their area. Another, but fussier option is the Santander Zero mastercard. It has no charges for cash withdrawals with the card, but charges 27% APR fro the date of withdrawal, so you need to clear the balance quickly.

    They use Maestro a lot in India. The only place that took visa when i was there was the Hotel. Everywhere else was cash.
