Selling a collectors car abroad

Hi.

I am a British citizen living in Turkey. I've had a classic 1971 VW Beetle for a year or so and restored it in that period. It's certainly a collectors car that's bound to draw a lot of attention abroad since Turkish ppl tend to prefer newer things and therefore don't see sense in forking out a large sum of money for a 38 year old car.

I can advertise on German, British and general European classic car forums I know that, but if I receive any interest I wouldn't have a clue what legal routes to follow to complete the sale. I could of course, on my EU passport, simply drive it to Germany but I am assuming selling it on there would be illegal. Does anyone know what the procedures would be or can anyone direct me to places that might? thanks in advance.

Oh and btw, It's a 1971 1600CC Super Beetle incase anyone's interested :P

Cheers.

Sell it to them through the Turkish method and then they have to 'import' it into Germany?

    registered in Turkey.

yes I suppose if the buyer would be willing to come over and buy it direct from me and then sort out it's transferral back to their country that would be doable.
  • Having bought and sold at least 25 air cooled VWs importing from the USA and germany in the last 5 years. I've sold them both where they need UK registring and I have UK registered them and sold them.

The chances of you getting a good price for your beetle from someone in europe with it being over there is very difficult. The trouble is before anyone can buy it they will probably want to see it in the flesh. This will be impossible, unless they come and see you but they wont being doing this if they are not sure. 99% of the vee dubs I've bought from the USA have been bought from pics only but come from California and Texas where I know they are going to be rust free. If yours is an original UK car it probably will have been subject to 30+ years of salty UK roads. At a time when these cars were not worth alot of money the cheapest poor qulity repairs may have been carried out to get it thru just one more mot, and a lot of peeps are wise to this now. What have you had done to it?

if you wnat to sell in the UK easier you (or buyer) really need to get it UK registered, to do this you will need the foreign registartion doc. If turkey is part of the EU you'll not need to pay import tax, if it isn't you will need to pay import tax, plus UK registartion fee (circa £45), plus MOT cost, plus any cost for work to pass the MOT (here), plus if its made after jan 1st 73 (very likely if its a super beetle which wi be a 1303, anly very few of these made before that date), all cars made after jan 1st 73 have to pay uk road tax, all cars made before are tax free.

Or you can do it the kind of not straight way, its not illegal by any means though.

You just MOT the car, 'i bought this car ages ago, I've done a load of work on it and now I want to UK register', have you got any docs sir - no. There are reems of forms to fill in,plus you'll need to insure on the chassis no before you go to DVLA and will have to regoster in 30 days or the isnurance co will cancle the polciy
If you have to pay import tax if turkey is outside the EU you will avoid this, but,
if the car has previsuy been Uk registered, you might not be able to do this. I've not done this myslef thsi way, but friends in the VW scene have, expecially if a car is bought from say the USA without any paperowrk form a scrapyard for example.

to summarise you or the new buyer will have to:

    MOT
UK register, cost cicra £45, pus probaby road tax, plus impet tax if turkey is outside the EU, plus the fact any potential buyer cant see it in the flesh before the can decide to buy.

If i were you I'd see further advise and post pics for sale on the forum of this site:
    https://www.volkszone.co.uk

other countries wil probably be worse.

post some pics here and tell me what works been done, how much you want and I;ll try and offer some further advice . I've no interste in buying myself. 2 small kids means I've no time for that now!

hope that info is of some use?
