I've just had a phone call from JL customer services. They will take back the hob and refund the cost in full  :T :j .
The lady I spoke to was unaware of the new legislation and I got the impression that something was going to be done about it on their site,

With service like that, I'm going to buy the replacement from JL as well.

NOTE to money savers - JL's Partnership card (Mastercard) pays 1% rebate on all LJ and Waitrose purchases and 0.5% on everything else, but doesn't appear on Martin's list of rebate cards the last time I looked. Rebate is paid in JL vouchers, together with other discount coupons and offers to card holders.

And it's also 6months interest free :p. I used mine to kit out my flat when I moved in.

I'm really pleased you managed to get a refund, I have had trouble with JL online in the past and it took far longer for me to get anything from them

JL Stores, on the other hand, are absolutely fantastic. I would suggest going to a store and buying your replacement from there if possible.

    miniemma,

I may go to a JL store, but I was going to try to arrange the pick up and deliver of the new hob in one call. That might be a bit difficult if it's got to involve a store and JL online. Also, unfortunately I live a fair distance from any JL store; I think that High Wycombe is the closest followed by Southampton or Reading then Bristol, but none is that close.
