Help! High Definition switch over!

Options
Dear All,

Hope everyone is well!.

I have a slight problem, I am alittle confused about what I need to do to make sure I am ok for this when it happens. I was wondering if anyone else has thought about this?. I have had alook at the government web site etc.

Well in the living room I have a thomson tv that is a couple of years old that is fed by cable ntl.Upstairs I have 3 tvs all portable that are fed by aerials on top of them. I am curious as to what I need to do, and what pieces of additional kit I need to make the upstairs tvs work?, as I assume the downstairs one will work ok as normal. I used to be up with the tv technology etc.

Any comments would be extremely helpful

Thanks

Jason Nielow

Hi Jason... I'm presuming that you mean the digital switchover, rather than the High definition (HD) switch?

There are no plans yet to switch everything over to HD yet, though the BBC are apparently setting themselves a target to 'produce' everything that way by 2012 IIRC.

In a few years time when the digital switch over takes place, you're going to need something with a digital tuner inside to convert the signals - either a set top box, or a new telly.

You are right in thinking that your cable fed (digital) TV will be fine, but your portable ones aren't.

However (still assuming we are talking about digital and not HD) you would be able to setup a distribution system in your house so that the NTL box feeds all the TVs but that would mean that every TV could only watch the channel being shown on the box downstairs.

I assume that once the analogue signal is switched off and the digital signal is turned up then internal aerials will be able to pick up digital terrestrial (with a digital tuner box).
