npower - take discount or run!

Options
I have been offered a £100 discount to stay with npower (or M&S Vouchers). Tempted to take the discount, but worried about DDebit suprises reading this forum and may end up paying them back! Could I save this much switching? or take the money and run!

Most dual fuel customers receive a £100 discount every twelve months from nPower as a matter of course.

Direct Debit installments are secondary to how much they are charging you for your particular consumption in total.

As to the last sentence, you'll have to fill in the details about the length of your piece of string in a switching site's calculator. (But, yes, it is easy to save £100 on a different tariff. But that depends on your string.)

I was thinking about leaving NPower after my recent gas bill told me they were increasing my monthly DD by £36. I queried this and was told they are now charging customers more over the two winter quarters as most people use more gas then. When I said that I would be comparing other providers prices and looking to move my account, the guy on the phone reminded me about my £100 dual fual credit due in January and offered to increase the monthly DD by just £2pm over the next 12 months.
As I read my meter regularly and try to be mean with my usage, this was a no-brainer; pay £24 extra over a year rather than £216 over 6 mths.
Has anyone actually had their DD reduced in the summer months without asking?
Last winter was very severe so consumption was bound to be higher-doesn't mean this one will be the same.
This seems like a money making scam-i will be saving a bit extra in case weather is cold but they are not having it until I can see I've used more fuel!
Are all the power companies doing this?
Sorry ElvisUK, this probably doesn't help much but just watch out for higher DD charges over the next 2 quarters and query them/read your meter to assess your genuine usage.;)
2 years 6 months to go until credit card/loan debt paid off...then start on the mortgage!!! :o
...but heading in the right direction :)
  • Good grief! That is my worry, when you hear of the SURPRISE bills. I have read a lot on this forum about monitoring my meter reading. To be honest, I have been quite lazy and have left that to them in the past, unless there was a problem and that did happen in my last house, leaving me with a whopping bill.
This is reminder that even though I am in a smaller, more efficient, house now, I could still get stung.

As for the £2 increase versus the £36. No wonder they can offer the £100!
    Feel quite gullable now.
I will keep a close eye out.
    THANKS
