Capital one say i'm liable for card usage after i have closed my account

I had a capital one credit card but wasn't using so decided to close it due to high interest rate and lack of use.

I was told over the phone that the card would be cancelled in 2 weeks as long as it wasn't used, if it was used then it would remain open.

I have not used it and got a letter through yesterday stating my account had been closed.

Part of the letter stated that I would be liable for any use on the card after the date of closing! How can this be I've closed the account and have cut up the card so I won't be using it. How can I be liable for use after its closed, surely the card should now be refused if used?

Transactions can sometimes take 6 months to be processed and may come through, also any continuous payment authorities would still be paid out and you would be liable.

It is normal within the industry.

I closed my Sky Card/barclaycard last year then went to make a payment on e-bay with paypal this week. The Skycard was in the list and still default which i forgot about.

The payment has gone through and I expect Barclaycard will be re-activating my account.

Any continuous payments for car insurance, breakdown cover etc will also re-activate accounts.

I can understand if I have brought something that hasn't been processed yet or if i have not cancelled a subscription.

One of the reasons for me closing it was to minimize any chance of fraud in my life. I don't have
any reasons to think any one has my details but its still a little concerning. Shouldn't my card be refused if i try to use it after it has been cancelled?

    Yes, of course.

OTOH, cancellation of an account does not mean you're not liable for transactions which you authorised before closure.
People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.
