re-install not going so well....can I use restore discs from other laptop?

make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD
If i remember rightly press F2 when the Acer screen appears then use the arrow key to move across to BOOT/Advanced, then move the CD to the top fo the list. Save then exit.
Give that a try.0 -
I've not managed to do anything yet! it is windows vista home premium. What I would try is get into the bios menu and select the boot from cd option. You may have to press del or f2 or something when the lappy first starts - it usually says at the bottom of the first post screen.
ok - pressed F2 and inserted disc 1 of recovery discs - now says 'loading RAMDISK image' and there's a bar across the bottom that is loading.....Bern :j0 -
managed to load disc 1 and then says cannot read disc 2 and is restarting computer.
So, suggestions for Plan B - as it seems I can't do a system restore?
The problem with the laptop is that it won't keep internet connection (I'm on a diff computer). Shall I uninstall and re-install the internet access?Bern :j0 -
Is disk2 scratched/damaged at all?0

Try cleaning the disc - wipe from the middle to the outside, see if that helps.
What exactly happens now when you turn the laptop on ?0 -
the disc doesn't appear to be damaged - there's no finger marks or anything like that.
I can get the desktop on - but as I said it loses internet connection immediately and says there's no networks available (there are).
I thought a system restore would be the best way to clean things up - but perhaps not.
when I then run Windows Network Diagnostics that doesn't find any problem - or it doesn't fix one either.Bern :j0 -
I have 'restore' CDs from a recent desktop we've bought (also an Acer) - and a friend's laptop (Acer) - would these be ok to use? (or is that a very silly question:o)Bern :j0

anyone? Can I use other acer laptop restore discs? We're got another laptop and desktop (both acer) - I've googled acer and they charge £50 for new restore CDs, bit of a !!!!!! when I've got the CDs here they just dont work!Bern :j0

I suppose you have tried windows system restore ?
In start menu > accessories >system tools> sytsem restore is where you can find it.
That will take you back to a previous date whenever the machine didn't have a problem. You don't lose data and it doesn't take long.

I know it's no consolation but I used to have an Acer laptop. I could never get their restore discs to work due to not being able to read the 2nd disc.
There appears to be something fundamentally flawed in their restore processThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
