    ....Then if Axminster carpet is fine mature cheddar then wilton carpet would be dairylea.

    You seem to be (deliberately ?) ignoring the point I am making.

    You say: "Due to their manufacture, the average domestic wilton sold by the roll in the local carpet shop is usually garish, cheap and nasty"

    I totally agree - BUT the following statement is equally valid
    "Due to their manufacture, the average domestic axminster sold by the roll in the local carpet shop is usually garish, cheap and nasty".

    Whether an individual likes the pattern or colours of a carpet has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of the carpet itself - which is what you seem to be saying. If you want garish you can have a 12 colour garish in Axminster, Wilton only do 5 colour garish !

    If you want a QUALITY carpet be it Axminster or Wilton (or tufted, which Axminster Ltd also make), you don't go to CarpetRight or the like.

    If Wilton carpet is such a rubbish method of carpet making, why do Axminster bother to make it and put this on their website ?
    " Axminster Carpets Ltd currently manufactures Wilton carpet for the majority of UK rail companies and many global airlines including British Airways and Virgin"

    Suggest you stick to underlay !

    Im sure laminate is easy to keep clean, but with dogs I think it would soon get very scratched and the noise of dogs running up and down it would drive you bananas :)

    Hi again,

    I referred to the 'average domestic wilton'. I never intended to state that Wilton is a rubbish method of manufacture, although I certainly shouldn't have compared it to cheap cheese, sorry... :lipsrseal

    Wiltons are great for contract use as they are massively hardwearing, tough and will last an age, but do not have the desired comfort aspect for use in a domestic environment! Just because a carpet is good enough for use on an airline or train, where toughness, hardwearingness and lastability is paramount but comfort does not play a massively important role, it does not necessarily make it suitable for use in the home, where comfort and softness is an extremely high priority, but will have nowhere near the footflow of a train or plane, therefore contract specified toughness is not required.

    Domestic wiltons sold by the roll in the carpet shop are usually imported polypropylene BCF wiltons, where there is a low amount of tufts per square inch, and the tufts have been burst at the tips to create a velvety effect, but the pattern gets lost and blurred because of it. On the other hand, there are not really any 'budget' quality axminster construction carpets on the market because it is not viable for the budget carpet manufacturers to produce them.

    ... When I meant garish I was referring to the quality of domestic products out there and not the design of their patterns. Sorry if I confused what I was trying to say.

    On the other hand, I personally wholeheartedly disagree with this:
    If you want a QUALITY carpet be it Axminster or Wilton (or tufted, which Axminster Ltd also make), you don't go to CarpetRight or the like.

    Why not? This suggests the regular roll-stockist type carpet shops just sell junk in comparison, which is certainly not true. 99% of any flooring retailers, be they a budget stockist in Grimsby or a high-end carpet planning service in Kensington would never stock Axminsters from Axminster by the roll! It also suggests that the average high street carpet shop cannot fullfil the requirements of a customer wishing to purchase a high spec carpet products, which IMO is nonsense nad slightly snobbish. I can appreciate that a small percentage of carpet shops only sell cheap and cheerful carpets, but to suggest companies like CarpetRight and the like are the same is ridiculous.
    Profit=sanity
    Turnover=vanity
    Greed=inhumanity:dance:

    I only quoted CarpetRight because they were the first name that came to mind :D

    If I wanted a "cheap" bedroom carpet I would go to CarpetRight (or similar) and see what they had "end of roll". If I wanted an 80/20 "Quality" carpet I would go to a more specialised carpet shop purely because they would have a much better choice of that type of carpet AND the staff are usually far more knowledgeable than else where.

    We went to our local family owned carpet shop to select a new carpet for the stairs/landing (haven't ordered it yet) - I can't actually remember if it is Axminster or Wilton !!!

    The ground floor of this house is hardwood floor so I haven't needed to worry too much about the quality of the carpets in general.
