Blonde Updating Laptop instead of Buying New one

Options
Right its been suggested to me that instead of throwing this piece of doo doo sorry laptop, through the window and then stamping on it and then buying a sparkly new one for £500, all i need to do is update the RAM.

Ok blonde here firstly has no idea what they are talking about and secondly wouldnt know where to get a RAM from except a farmers market.

So my computer apparently has a cruddy 128Mb RAM and if i get more it will actually run faster. How much more do i get and how much does it cost to get it done and where the flip do i go to get it?

I only use the computer for wireless internet and occasionally to write letters and look at photos. I dont do downloading games or films purely because my blondness does not allow it lol.

Thanks for help guys and gals.

    I like blondes ;)

tell me what lappy you've got and i'll go look out a nice simple guide for you :)

(usually as easy as undoing a screw, removing a plastic cover, and plugging the new mem in the right way around)

128Mb of Ram isn't a lot compared to new machines being sold today but should still be enough to run XP and all the other things you mention. Before you throw money at it (laptop memory isn't cheap) have you tried a bit of maintenance? Some tips here: http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/speed.mspx

head over to https://www.crucial.com, put in your PC model number, or click "scan my system", this should identify the correct memory. If you are using XP, then 512MB in total should be enough for what you need. To fit it, it is either a couple of screws on the bottom, or sometimes you have to prise the keyboard off.

If you don't have XP, consider a new laptop from Dell £300 or so from http://www.dmxcomputers.co.uk
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Post what make the laptop is here and we can help better. Memory is going to be your cheapest option.
  • Ok thanks for the replies, my Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite
    model number ps141e-04ycm-en
Celeron 1500, 128 RAM, 20 Gib Hard drive.

I may sound like i know what im talking about but my boyf has just read it to me off the bottom of the lappy lol.

I know this lappy is about 5 - 6 yrs old but it does do the job just very slooooooowly. My grandad left it to me when he passed away 2 yrs ago so id really rather not stamp on it like my original post. (sorry i was having a tantrum).

    Thanks again xxxx

  • Thanks no offence taken im sure ive been called worse.

rogerramjet thank you so much for your reply wow that crucial memory is really cheap. Do you know if it is just as simple as taking the back off and putting it in? In other words is that what i need and shall i just buy it?.
