Please help: Firefox & IE problems

Hi alll

at my wits end with my damn laptop. Two days ago out of the blue, I could no longer bring up either browser. AVG wopuld still update so i know still connected to web. I rollled back system restore by a few days to no avail. Did it again (now 7 days back) and IE works. Firefox does not.

I really am perplexed. Let me tell you what I have done and see if anyone can assist:

Uninstalled Fx and re-installed.
Deleted all old folders of Fx.
Uninstalled and re-installed Java.

Now, Fx tells me it has downloaded but does not perform the installation. When I search for it, it is nowhere to be found!

On a seperate note, IE works but when I open a 2nd tab, it crashes. Every time, without fail.

FYI, I am using Vista (regrettably), a 2 year old Dell Laptop and testing my partner's patience with all the shouting.

Pleasee can anyone help on both problems? FYI, I do waqnt to continue using Fx long term, it is so much quicker, easier and more secure IMO than IE.

Thanks in advance,

V

As I'm a relatively new poster I can't post links, but if you click on the Sticky at the top of the board entitled 'Malware/Spyware Removal Guide' you will be able to find the links for Malwarebytes and Hijackthis. I would suggest you downlad, install and run these 2 programs then post the logs in a separate thread.

The chances are your computer is harbouring some nasties that are preventing FF and IE from running properly.

There are some excellent technical experts on this forum including AlienRik who will be able to help you.

So Firefox isn't installed at all?

Download it again now from the official website: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

    Save if to your desktop.

Double click the install file and install FireFox.

If you suspect you have malware / spyware, run Malwarebytes Antimalware and SpyBot S+D and let us know, links in the forum for these packages.
