Suse linux 9.3 help

Ive just installed suse linux 9.3 on a spare pc, and the fact i know absolutly nothing about doesn't help... But the problem i have is that i get to the login screen and its asking me for a user name and password, which it never asked for through the installation... All i can think of is the u/n should be root as with the p/w but they dont work.....
Any ideas of linux users please........

I'm not a Linux user but found this guide to installing and I think you should have been prompted to enter a root password (twice, - see Step 5) so maybe need to reinstall.
