where can I find my meter's serial number?

I read in the Mail recently that we should check that the serial numbers on the gas meter and on the gas bill are the same,but I can't find the number on my meter can anyone tell me exactly where on the meter it is,please.I have asked my supplier on they just the number is under the gas screen,ther is anumber there but it is a very long onme,the number on my bill just 6 numbers.Any help appreciated

    if you look at the meter it is sometimes located below the dial or the digits bit, others have a sticker on it with a bar code and the number above or below it

    You are looking at the wrong number on the bill, an MPAN is 21 digits long.

    Mpan is for electricity not gas as the op is asking about

    seriously though checking the serial number against bills is a good idea
