Damp proof and re-wire - which to do first?

Hello there,

I have just bought my first house and it needs a damp proof course and re-wiring.

The damp proofing will involve removing the plaster inside to 3 feet. I was just wondering which job I should get done first - it isn't possible to get them both done at the same time due to availability issues.

I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks in advance.

  • I'd get the rewire done first. You don't want brand new plaster work to be ruined by light switch and socket runs etc.

DPC I would say ...but I can't see why not both at once ..unless it's a big job and requires a course of bricks removing and a membrane fitting?

DPC using creme isn't a big job anymore.. no silicone smelly injection etc

    Cheap too. http://www.dampness-info.co.uk/order_diydoc.htm#Damp1000

DPC replastering will need to dry out so proably best going 1st? Get the whole thing finished faster that way?

Suggest you must do both together otherwise you will end up paying a plasterer to come twice. It will also be a lot cheaper for a rewire if the electrician does not need to worry about messing up decoration and this way all the wires will be hidden. If needed new recessed boxes can be fitted. Once rewire and old plaster etc removed back to brick for damp proofing, injecting and all re-plastering can be done at once.

It will also be a lot cheaper if you are not living there and all carpets etc removed.
  • Hi CDLC,
Easiest thing to do is to tell sparkys that you are having dpc work done, if they get in first they will have less making good of plaster to do (you might get a bit of discount but don't hold your breath). you get damproofing work done, then they 2nd fix and everyone is happy.
If it can't be done together, electrics first and ask your sparky if he will return and take the sockets off where damproofing work is to be done and refix them, his extra charge for this might even be covered by not having to make good plaster.

And timmers you keep on mentioning those two websites, obviously i assume you don't work for them -.- so you're being ripped of mate, you will get exactly the same product from these people cheaper, another suppplier is below, who is also much cheaper

there are loads of people selling this stuff, most sell it at vastly overpriced rates
and just to confirm I have nothing to do with the 2 companies I've mentioned above except being an occasional customer :-D

The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

The very best way (but it’ll take a bit of organising)

    Remove plaster
    DPC
    First fix electrics
    Re-plaster
    Second fix electrics

Just an example of the stuff mate...and it says that this can be self certified, which is handy, and explains a little more than a simple supplier does usually ,,,,some people don't know anything about it at all and pay over the odds for silicone and that's annoying considering the difference.

Ebay shops are often the best places to shop I agree ..added that one to my favourites for future reference ..cheers ;)
