Hiya.
Have been with Eon since beginning of Sept 2008, on a pre payment meter with both electric and gas.
When we started with Eon, we was told after 1 Year we could come of pre payment meter and go to direct debit.

Theres no debt on meter, changed from another company where we was on meter with that company.

We was told it would cost 50.00 EACH meter to be changed.

Would really like to stay with Eon. ( tesco points etc.lol), Hubby rang them earlier this evening, as was told ' its your prorogative if you wish to change suppliers???. '.

Not very helpful person i must say.

Any help, how we casn change from meter to dd please, please can they really charge us for this?.
many thanks
any help would be fantastic, thanks
sarah

E-ON appear to be one of the companies who charge for changing meters.

Others don't charge, however if you switch to another company with pre-pay meters, they may be reluctant to change meters until you have been with them for a while. Unfortunately companies are wary of people with pre-pay meters and it means offering credit.

if i rang eon again, and said i wish to close my a/c with them for both gas and ellecy, and tell them i wish to go to another supplier, to go straight to direct debit, do you think they might change there mind, so they dont lose a customer.

reason i was on meter was, always have been since i was a single parent, then found hubby, and we stayed with meters but in a better financial situation where we can do direct debit?.

    hmm. dunno what to do

Send them written advice as to what you intend, ie along the lines of: Whilst I have been happy with the services you have provided me with so far, I know find myself in a position where I am forced to consider switching suppliers due to the heavy cost of prepaid token meter fuels, I had enquired about having the meters removed but was advised a fee of £50 per meter would apply, this is totally unacceptable to me and would destroy any saving I would make by the switch, please advise if you are prepared to waiver these fees in order to retain me as a customer, if some arrangement cannot be made I will be forced to take my custom to one of your competitors who is prepared to absorb this cost. blah de blah No point in ringing as the chance of you getting hold of someone in a position to authorise it are slim, that's if you manage to get hold of anyone that does stray away from the stock answer of "that's the charge hard luck".

It's a pity you just missed a £110 dual fuel cashback offer for scot power this Sunday. That would have paid for the cost of replacing both meters and left you with a tenner to celebrate.

    Hi mumof3mk,

I am sorry that the agent was not very nice to you on the phone.

They should have explained properly that E.ON have guidelines to remove pre-payment meters, each case would be considered individually, but the basis of the rules are as follows.

The customer needs to have lived in the property for one year if this is rented.
There will be a charge of £50 per meter, this is to cover the cost of the appointment.
An external credit check may be performed, if there is no previous payment history for credit meters.
The customer will need to pay future bills by Monthly Direct Debit.
The pre-payment meters must not have been installed to collect a debt.

These guidelines are now followed by E.ON.

While I do not think its unreasonable for them to charge a fee to change the meter if i can get out of paying for something i will try. British Gas have offered to change my meters for free. Just shopping around at the moh to see who cheapest.

It's still available. Why has it been 'missed'?

im having this same problem at the moment. i am on an EON preay meter and they will not budge on giving me free meters. i have done a search and for my area EDF are coming up about £150 a month cheaper if i switch to DD plus they will install both meters for free. So im gonna change to them for now and go back to EON in the future

    good luck

If they really are £150 cheaper per month then your account will be blocked for having a very high useage. You will not be granted a domestic tariff.
