council housing transfer...help required

Not necessarily - that may be the case in your area but it certainly isn't the case everywhere. In our area there's a 'common' list between most of the HAs and the council, BUT the HAs have some additional flexibility with some properties.jpet77 wrote:As for Housing Associations: The waiting lists are really long (as in years). The lists are only open for a couple of months each year and then they close them until the following year. It is worth persisting and getting on the list because it's free and it can only benefit you even if the size of the waiting list puts you off.
These are indeed worth looking into: they have some part-buy / part-rent properties which they built, but may also offer some schemes where you choose the house and they stump up part of the mortgage, so you pay them rent and mortgage.jpet77 wrote:I don't know whether you are in a position to purchase a property, but some Housing Associations offer part rent part buy schemes. I got accepted for a brand new 3 bed property (they did want the deposit there and then when I went to view the property though) - this was a lot quicker than renting from the housing association (took about 2 months) but you have 2 bills each month (rent and mortgage repayment) so I decided to buy outright in the end.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Check with your local system, there may be a bidding system in place, which you just need to get involved in, sometimes called choicebased lettings. Ask your housing dept.
website isn't working for some reason
don't understand what you mean about "bidding system"0 -
Unfortunatly, council will only let me transfer into a flat as opposed to a 2 bedroom house, which is silly, as they let me move into a 2 bedroomed house in the first place

in my experience if you want to move you have to get motivated i was on the transfer list for 8 years ( 5 children me & hubby in a 3 bed) i was on the phone to the ha and council every day to hear the same story we havent got any 4 beds available.one day i thought i will get a 4 so i printed out 100 flyers saying house exchange wanted put the old trainers on and posted them to every house i was interested in.luckily for me ive now got an exchange going through now i will pay for the loft to be the 4th bed .my motto is if you want to move keep trying as your exchanger is out there somewhere even if they dont know it yet.0

I appreciate what your saying. However, even the estates officer said : who's gonna want to do an exchange from a good area into the area you live in. So, not looking best hopeful.0
