Do you have a slide scanner?

If so scan the negs in, and it'll depend on what detail was captured, but you should be able to boost the midtones and highlights using a Levels command in Photoshop, or free software such as Paint.Net

You cannot achieve the same by scanning in the printed photo, you must scan the negative, or have them digitised on CD for you by a photo lab.

You'd have to ask. Good photo labs can put photos on CD from negs.

Shame you didn't get them processed in store, as it would have been easy to go back.

Were the pictures taken in dark conditions, I presume they were?

The pictures may be underexposed! If the negatives are light then then they're underexposed (and if very dark they're overexposed)

and that'll be the difference between a 'store' and a 'good photo lab' :)

OK this may be a bit crude, but could you take a photo of a negative (hold it up against) a window before it gets dark) and put the picture on here?
