Ho do I find out when and what Payment protection I took out?

I have been contacted by a company to claim for two payment protections that I took out in 2001 and 2003. I have not kep any details relating to this and therefore have no idea what they relate to. Is there anyway of finding out what I took them out for and who with?!

Seeing as payment protection plan data is not published anywhere, how does this company know you had payment protection? If they do know then its a data protection breach. Do you really want to deal with a company that is happy to break the rules. Especially when its trying to put in claims that others broke rules?

They could be making it up. I had a claims company cold call me telling me I could claim my PPI back. I have never had PPI on anything. Plus, if I did it would be me that sold it to myself and I couldnt claim it back!!! Although a claims company would probably try.

Maybe so, but how does a claims company have that info? They are not lenders.

I know and half these claims companies are not actually registered to handle data. I thought if you handled data your firm had to be on the data register and lots that I have checked are not. Is that legal?

You have to be registered with data protection. Its only £35 a year but it is a requirement.

Perhaps they dont register as they are blatantly breaking the rules in getting the data in the first place. That said, I think a lot of the time when they make these phone calls they have no data and are making it up pretending on the hope that the person will have something somewhere.

Sounds like the company offering to help me with my claim for the work injury I'd suffered. I haven't suffered a work injury. Just calling in the hope of getting lucky.
