Is it possible to get a copy of your agreement from 2000

Can anyone answer my query?

I took out a car loan agreement back in 2000 & it finished in 2004. I contacted the finance company for a copy of my agreement (to check how much ppi was on it) but was told that as it was 9 years ago, they dont have a copy anymore.

Will this be correct or are they just at it. How long have they got to keep agreements for? Is there any other course of action i can take to get this agreement?

Companies often destroy paperwork (especially pre computer paperwork) after a period when the debt has been settled.
How long have they got to keep agreements for?

There is no rule that says they have to hold on to it for any period. Usually its held on to protect themselves for upto 6 years after but that is a maximum not a minimum.

I got an agreement from a firm from 2000 and settled in 2003. I just rang to ask for it and they sent it out. You can try this or perhaps write a letter by recorded delivery and see what they say.
  • The Fos sent Nassie a letter asking her for her credit card agreement. When she rang back and told them she did not have a copy they said it was ok and just asked her when she took the agreement out.
