How do I cancel a credit card?

This is a really simple question but I can't find the answer! How do I close a credit card account? I got an ASDA card ages ago and used it for a while on my petrol to get 1p off a litre, but no longer have a car and never go to ASDA. It's just cluttering up my purse and I'm aware that having more credit available than necessary doesn't do my credit rating any favours.

I know you can just cut them up and bin them, but do I need to write to GE Money (who supply the credit) or something else? Will they then close my account and stop sending me statements?

Either phone them and request written confirmation or send them a letter (via recorded delivery I think is best) and again ask for written confirmation.

Is this your only credit card because, if so, I'd think twice about closing it in the current climate.

A phone call to customer services should be all that's required to cancel a credit card, but ask the lender to confirm closure to you in writing.

Most do not ask you to return their cards. You're simply requested to cut them up.
